Four types of door construction are common in the cabinet industry. There are many variations on these four types, but the general specifications are:

Flat or Recessed Panel

2-1/4"-wide, 3/4"-thick solid wood stiles and rails are joined at the four corners with mortise-and-tenon joints. Joints are bonded together with adhesive and metal pins. The profile of the frame varies depending on the door style's specifications. The panel is formed using plane-sliced veneer on a plywood center panel and is “floated” within a groove machined into the frame.

Multi-Recessed or Side by Side

Multi-panel style doors have varying numbers of panels depending on the door's width. Panels are recessed within a solid wood frame/grid. This style may have either a five-piece drawer head or a slab style drawer head. The same “floating” method in installation of the panel used by KraftMaid for other panel doors helps prevent cupping and warping.

Solid

Frames are constructed in the same way as recessed/multi-recessed panel doors. The center panel is constructed from pieces of solid wood that are glued together to obtain the correct width. The panel is then shaped to produce the raised profile. The finished panel is “floated” in a groove machined into the frame. “Floating” assures the ability of the panel to resist cracking during expansion and contraction caused by humidity changes.

Veneer

Frames are constructed as above. The center panel has a raised profile and is constructed using a substrate material with a wood veneer. Combined with the “floating” panel method, this type of construction produces a door that resists expansion and shrinkage which causes splitting and checking, while providing uniformity of grain.

Solid Panel with laminate surface

A single slab of MDF (medium density fiberboard) is routed to form an edge profile and the appearance of a center panel. Flexible vinyl is laminated to this substrate, using industrial adhesives applied with heat and pressure. The stability of MDF makes this door type especially resistant to cupping and warping.

This door has no frame and is constructed by gluing up pieces of solid wood. It is strengthened by the manner in which the pieces of solid wood are reversed as they are glued, providing cupping and warping resistance. A 45-degree radius is often shaped around the perimeter of the door. Some manufacturers do not use the reverse gluing method; those slab doors require battens across the back (inside) of the door to help resist cupping and warping.

Adjustable Hinges

KraftMaid hinges are concealed and easily adjustable vertically and horizontally. The type of hinge that each style receives is related to the amount that the door style overlays the cabinet frame. Hinges also vary within a door style, depending on the function of the door on a particular cabinet, such as a lazy susan or easy reach cabinet.

“Floating” Panels

KraftMaid doors feature solid wood frames enclosing either solid wood or carefully veneered “floating” panels. Floating panels allow expansion and contraction of panels without cracking when moisture levels change.

PermaSet Bumpers

KraftMaid doors feature PermaSet bumpers. These “eversoft,” permanently installed door bumpers remain pliable and firmly in place for quiet closing, every time.
